Jewelry Ring Molds for PMC3, Silver Art Clay?
Mo Betta asked:
Hi!
New to jewelry making, and I need some help from the experts. I have been experimenting with precious metal clay, art clay, art silver. What I’m trying to figure out is what’s the best way to make a thin band ring. Like the stackable type. I see a lot of hammered bands and would love to create my own with a twist.

Do I need a ring mold or a clay cutter? I know you can just cut out your clay and wrap it around the mandrel, but there has to be an easier cookie cutter way to do this. Any suggestions tips will be appreciated!

Hot Trends in Jewelry
Janey Yang asked:
Consumers are cutting back on spending nowadays, but jewelry retailers are looking toward the upcoming summer months, to get consumers back into jewelry stores. Additionally, with the trends of bright colors and bold pieces, consumers can’t help but take notice of and want a piece of fashion item this year.
Fashion magazines are discussing trends in jewelry for the spring in their latest issues, and big pieces are definitely in style. InStyle magazine focused on nature- and tribal-themed pieces and bright colors, while Lucky included a whole spread of classic, yet modern, cocktail rings. In its March issue, Vogue gave brides-to-be some of the magazine’s favorite engagement rings and wedding day jewelry. A lot of this season’s trends are a natural progression from last season. Necks were bare and rings were big, but this season necklaces have made an extremely bold comeback..
For spring and summer 2008, shine is everywhere in terms of fashion accessories. From the purses we carry to the clothes we choose to the shoes we wear, the newest trend is all about shine from head to toe. Jewelry is one accessory that will never go out of style and can last a lifetime with the proper care. So while consumers may be cutting back on a lot of spending, jewelry retailers are hoping that the latest jewelry trends will get consumers into the stores and at least looking at the latest pieces. For upcoming holidays and special occasions, be sure to carry items that are on-trend.
Nature-inspired Jewelry Trend
Nature-inspired Jewelry has become one of the hottest trends in Hollywood today! Tons of celebrities are sporting nature jewelry with both elegant formal wear and casual everyday looks. Snake jewelry is one of the most popular styles of nature-inspired jewelry.
For centuries, people have crafted nature-inspired jewelry in appreciation of the world around them. In the Victorian period, romantic notions about the natural world caused a flourish of nature-inspired jewelry and art. Flower jewelry and images of animals were very popular styles; Victoria herself loved snake jewelry and believed the serpent motif represented fidelity and love. The more people learned about plants, animals, and the oceans, the more they were moved to create nature style jewelry and nature inspired jewelry.
“Enlightenment” Jewelry Trend
Sentimental Jewelry is a strong category not only for self-purchase but also for gift giving.
Engraved jewelry featuring messages of love, poetry or initials will be the most popular.
Yoga Inspired Jewelry is becoming abundant, reflecting the growing number of people who are adopting this ritual discipline, which is said to bring physical and spiritual alignment. Yoga talismans are also popular among those who just want an overt and motivational reminder.
Green Jewelry and Green Gems are being used in many jewelry collections this season. Jewelers with a green conscience are making a point to incorporate earth friendly methods and materials into their jewelry designs.
Jewelry For A Cause is becoming plenteous. As JFC says, the jewelry industry is that with a heart! Designers today are donating proceeds from sales to endless philanthropic causes and people in need. Designers’ passion comes pouring out artistically through the creation, often reflecting the organization benefiting from the proceeds.
Big, Bold Jewelry Trend
Wearing less jewelry pieces is more when it comes to the top jewelry trends for 2008, but the key ingredient for trend-setting fashionistas is larger, bolder styles that are gem-intensive.
That advice comes from Jesse Chao of Gems by Chao, a leading Houston fine jeweler. Chao specializes in advising her gala-minded clientele-a mix of socialites and philanthropists-and matching fine jewelry to their personal style. In a statement, Chao said women who are already planning to attend galas will be wearing less fine jewelry but adorning themselves with larger, more impressive pieces, for a classic “Grace Kelly” look. I’ve actually already seen this trend over the past year, less jewelry but each piece that is worn is big and bold – one big bracelet, no necklace but super long earrings.
While I personally don’t feel comfortable in really large jewelry pieces, for that special occasion – red carpet affair for example, it does make sense because of the dramatic statement a few large jewelry pieces can make.
Ethnic inspired jewelry is supposed to be gaining momentum. Due to the increased cost of gold, we’ll see more filigree type designs, which look great but cut down on the gram weight. Now, this sounds interesting!
Bold Pendants Trend
This is no time for a wimpy drop necklace. You need a substantial pendant that really makes a fashion statement, and two of the hottest colors will be yellow and its complementary color, purple.
Yellow
Refreshing gemstones like Citrine, Yellow Topaz, Amber, and Chrysoberyl and simulated Canary Diamond jewelry, topaz glass beads and the Cubic Zirconia substitutes will keep you on top of seasonal jewelry trends! Like this lovely Citrine:
Purple
A great counter point color for yellow is purple, which will also be highlighted this spring. Like this gorgeous pendant.

Where/how to hire artist(s) to create modest jewelry designs/figurines?
DJP asked:
I run a small jewelry company and I would like to make approximately 1 inch figurings of tons of random things (e.g. zoo animals, musical instruments, etc.). My budget per piece is $25-$75. The artist would have to draw an item for my company to then create as a jewelry mold; or perhaps have the artist make a (clay?) figurine. The copyright and all rights to the art would belong to my company.

Stainless Steel Art World (4) – Stainless Steel Jewelry
Krista QQ(www.123giftfactory.com) asked:
Stainless steel jewelry has the added advantage of being a more rugged alloy than gold or silver as it is nearly indestructible. Stainless steel jewelry is naturally hypo-allergic.
Stainless steel jewelry’s rise to fame and popularity is not really surprising; primarily because of the price difference between stainless steel jewelry and a lot of the other jewelry types that are sold in dominant market share positions today.
There is no doubting in nowadays for owning a piece of stainless steel jewelry is just in fashion, and it does not seem to make any difference which part of the world it is, stainless steel jewelry has become a big hit in many countries, the pursuing for this trend is universal. Stainless steel jewelry is cheaper than gold jewelry and it is most definitely cheaper than silver jewelry, so what you are going to find ultimately is that the stainless steel jewelry has become so popular first and foremost because it presents a cheaper alternative to materials that are already set in the market such as gold and silver.
More so than that however, what makes stainless steel jewelry the new silver is that it appears to have impacted society in the same way that silver jewelry did when it was originally introduced. It used to be that a piece of silver jewelry was gawked over the whole evening by friends and relatives, but now what people are finding is that their stainless steel jewelry pieces are starting to receive the same attention! For example, a relative might be so surprised that the jewelry piece is actually made of stainless steel that they need to examine it further. People have encountered this at parties when they wear stainless steel jewelry and the end result appears to be that having stainless steel jewelry is now a status symbol; just like silver has been all along.
Stainless steel jewelry is the choice of everyone and from teenagers that wish to make a style statement to adults who need something special to look more appealing, there is much to be said in favor of jewelry and stainless steel jewelry is not an exception even though it does not use silver or diamonds or even gold in it. The advantage to using stainless steel jewelry is that it is not as expensive as the ones made from precious metals and thus its popularity has grown of late.
Stainless steel jewelry allows you to make use of a very fundamental property of stainless steel and that is its versatility, which means that it suits different needs of different people who may want their jewelry to do for them different things. Thus, where diamond, gold and silver jewelry is only useful for looking showy and plated jewelry lacks in being an adornment that will look good and expensive, stainless steel jewelry is something that is useful under all conditions and thus has more utility and so will make for a very appropriate gift as well.
Whether stainless steel jewelry replaces silver is definitely to be debated, but the indications is definitely that the replacement scenario is a strong possibility; something that would make stainless steel jewelry the new silver.
Once you have decided on owning stainless steel jewelry or want to gift it to someone you will immediately realize that this type of jewelry does not require much maintenance as is the case with the precious metal jewelry pieces which require frequent polishing, and there is also no question of smudging this particular form of jewelry. Now, once you realize the lack of maintenance needs and non-smudging qualities of stainless steel jewelry you can gift it to others sure that you are not burdening the recipient with something that will cause them inconvenience.
Another reason why stainless steel jewelry makes for an ideal gift that can suit different occasions is that it is very good when it comes to wear and tear of the jewelry. When considering jewelry made from precious metals, there is always the lurking fear of over using the jewelry, which because stainless steel is an alloy and thus very durable is not the case with stainless steel jewelry. Thus, when you gift stainless steel jewelry you can be sure that the recipient can wear it whenever the desire arises and there is no worry with regard to ruining it either.
Mr. Peter Skubic is man who could hardly be ignored in the jewelry art history in Europe, he was acted as a special jewelry professor in the Cologne Institute of Technology. When traditional gold jewelry are still absolutely dominant in European in the 1960s and 1970s, he boldly got rid of the traditional restrictions, and use stainless steel, a kind of material that never been used in traditional jewelries, he used this material and displayed it as a main theme, as to reveal the special quality and colors of stainless steel, he want to reflect the material’s aesthetic value instead of the material’s itself value, thus to found a new visual angle of art jewelry.
Skubic’s works have simple styles, distinct masculine qualities emitted from their bodies naturally, it reflected a simplification process of the abstract aesthetics.
Finally, the cost of stainless steel jewelry is such that you can afford it and since it does not cost as much as gold or silver, it means you can wear it at any time without needing to worry about the consequences and thus you get more pleasure from owning it. All that you need to do is change your mindset and get used to this novel kind of jewelry that is virtually indestructible and which is carefully made through carving of steel into any type of design, and which does not tarnish either thus making it.
As a sort of future material, stainless steel’s special cool qualities could not only give jewelries more style feelings, also could stand the test of time and ever young.
